Significance of Akshaya Thrithiyai

"Akshaya Thrithi" is one of the most significant day for the Hindus. It generally falls either in late April or in early May month.

In the recent years there has been a lot of hype created around the Akshaya Thrithi. Especially jewelry shops mislead people in buying jewels on Akshaya Thrithi day. So I tried to collect information on what actually happened on Akshaya thrithi and its significance. I was awestruck after coming to know about its significance as mentioned below:

Significance of Akshaya Thrithi :

It is believed that it was on this day the following events happened :

Lord Krishna's friend, Sudama (also known as Kusela) met him and offered him rice flakes. Lord Krishna ate it and made Sudama rich.He proved to the world that "A friend in need is a friend in deed".




King Kubera regained his lost wealth and became the Lord of wealth.












Lord Vishnu accepted Goddess Lakshmi to be on his chest.




















Lord Vishnu incarnated himself as Lord Parasuram(6th Avatar of him).




















Lord Vishnu incarnated himself as Lord Balaram(7th Avatar of him,elder brother of Lord Krishna in dwapara yuga).


















Lord Brahma created the universe in the first yuga - Kritha yuga. (In the Hindu mythology,there are four yugas - Krita yuga,Tretha yuga,Dwapara Yuga and Kali yuga).












Saint Adi shankara sang Kanakadhara slogam.















Draupadi of Mahabharata received "Akshaya Patra".


















Lord Krishna saved Draupadi from vastrahara.




















River Ganga entered the earth.
















Sage Vyasa started narrating Mahabharatha to Lord Ganesha while he started writing it.














Goddess Annapurani took birth on earth.





















What to do on this day:

  • It is believed that whatever is done on this day yields thousand times its result. For example helping the needy, elderly people etc.
  • Anything like dresses, books etc can be given as donation.
  • Curd rice should be served to the needy.

With so many auspiciousness associated with this day, let us try to help the needy the best way we can!
